as
early as 1904, with the first large scale arrival of US marines, The
jungles of Subic Bay have been used to train military in survival
techniques. In the 1960’s with the escalation of the Vietnam War, the
jungles value as a training area was greatly enhanced. The US military
relied on real jungle experts, the Aetas.
The
Aetas are a nomadic mountain tribe who has lived in the area for
centuries. During the Vietnam War and afterwards, the Aetas taught
their skills to US military including Marines, Navy seals and Special
Forces units at the Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) Camp
When the US military departed the Philippines the JEST camp was
converted to teach non-military students. Under the SBMA, The Aetas
still teach at the JEST, and act as jungle guides and forest rangers.
